Concussion, POTS, and Chiropractic

Concussion and whiplash injuries have an effect on every organ, cell, and tissue in the human body.  Current research on concussions is proving the theory that trauma to the neck during concussive injuries plays a role in post-concussive syndrome and therefore delays in healing are evident.  Finally, more attention is being given to these traumatic injuries and bringing forth necessary treatment options after concussions.
One of the side effects of a concussion can be postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).  POTS is an inappropriate response of the cardiovascular system during different postures, causing dramatic increase in heart rate, dramatic drop in blood pressure, which then results in fainting.  A 2016 medical research study followed 34 children who had been diagnosed with post concussive syndrome to determine if POTS was present.  Shockingly they found that 70% of the children showed signs and symptoms of POTS, as well as fainting.
Chiropractic adjustments can alleviate POTS by delivering gentle, specific manipulations to the head and neck, as well as full spinal adjustments.  The structure of the neck allows for nerves to flow through the spine and if injured in a concussive type of injury this misalignments can have negative effects.  A chiropractor specializes in the function of these nerves that cause POTS signs and symptoms to be present.  Who knew that a head injury can cause such changes in the cardiovascular system?!?!  Proving that the brain and spinal cord have control over every function in the human body.  When an injury occurs to the head and neck, it is crucial to restore proper nervous system functioning as soon as possible!

Chiropractic Care After a Stroke...Seriously????

Stroke is the leading cause of disability and the 5th leading cause of death in the United States.  During a stroke, an interruption of blood flow to the brain occurs that results in lack of oxygen and brain tissue death.  Those that survive a stroke can have a wide range of symptoms or outcomes because of that stoke.  Some of these deficits include numbness in hands, arms, and feet, trouble with thinking and attention, paralysis on one or both sides of the body, walking difficulties, difficulty controlling emotions, and interruptions of activities of daily living such as brushing teeth, bathing, and getting dressed.
Chiropractic care can help alleviate the severity of a lot of these deficits or possibly relieve them completely.  A 58 year old man who had suffered a stroke at the age of 40 was studied while receiving chiropractic care.  His hand was involuntarily contracted and close to 100% non usability.  He needed assistance to put on his coat, was unable to exercise, and was told that these were permanent changes that he would need to "just live with."
After just 2 months of chiropractic adjustments, he was able to use that hand to turn pages in a book! 6 months after that, he had a noticeable change in his mobility and also had the ability to fully flatten his hand that just 8 months prior had been contracted.  He also was able to rejoin Pilates and was able to dress himself completely!  By allowing the body to function at full capacity, the symptoms of stroke were able to resolved to a certain degree.  What a fantastic result for someone who was told he would never live his life to the fullest following a stroke!

The Peaks and Valleys of Healing

Time and Repetition.  We all don't want to wait to heal. All good things in life take time and repetition, and so in our office we often say, "Healing comes in peaks and valleys." Often times chiropractic patients report that they are experiencing signs and symptoms that are unexpected.  Especially during the beginning of their care plans, patients may have the return of old symptoms, or even new symptoms never experienced before.  This is commonly known as a time of changes that occurs right before a "healing breakthrough."
As the function of the spine and nervous system begins to improve, there will be changes to the musculoskeletal systems.  This triggers a sort of wake-up call to nerves that have been dormant for a long period of time, sometimes even several years.  What we must remember is that the body is going through a natural healing process, and that no matter how low the valley is there will be a peak that follows.  Your body is improving and healing daily, and hold on to the fact that the peak is on the way!  We expect you to have peaks and valleys on the road to optimal health.

Do You Grind Your Teeth?

Between 5.9% to 49.6% of children under the age of 18 grind their teeth and/or clench their jaw at night during sleep.  There are significant links found between grinding teeth and other health issues such as headaches, migraines, anxiety, depression, aggression disorders, dental abnormalities and just plain irritability.  Not to mention the high level of annoyance it brings to anyone else who lives with a teeth grinder!  Traditional therapies for this include dental equipment and appliances, and pharmaceuticals, although their efficacy rates are not well known.

However, we do know that subluxations or misalignments of the spine affect the function of our nervous systems.  The nervous system is responsible for the development of clenching the jaw and grinding teeth.  This leads one to believe the positive results available once you remove the subluxation of the spine with chiropractic adjustments.  A study published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, & Family Health in 2017  followed a 9 year old boy who had been a teeth grinder for over 4 years.  His grinding was so loud his parents could hear it from the next room over.  The child also had poor posture, and was not getting high quality sleep at night.

After his chiropractic examination it was revealed that the child had severe subluxations in the neck.  This resulted in the dysfunction of his nervous system and muscle imbalances.  His neck muscles were extremely tight as a result, and all of these symptoms meant poor quality of sleep for the child.  Huge improvements were made after specific chiropractic adjustments to his neck and spine.  He also showed great improvements in his posture, and because his nervous system was allowed to function properly he no longer was grinding his teeth at night.

Should I Take a Muscle Relaxer???

It is estimated that 75%-85% of adults are affected by back pain! This pain interferes with all areas of our lives, including recreation, family time, work, and sleep.  Over the counter pain medications such as Motrin, Tylenol, Ibuprofen, etc along with prescription NSAIDS and muscle relaxers often are turned to in hopes of some relief for their pain.

Life University researchers performed a study to compare the use of muscle relaxer medications vs. chiropractic care.  Their results showed that chiropractic care provided overall greater effectiveness than the use of muscle relaxers.  They also showed better results with the combination of muscle relaxers and chiropractic care together over the placebo group.  The group of patients receiving chiropractic adjustments had the GREATEST improvement in "global impression of severity".

What this proves is that although there is always an availability of medication, chiropractic care and should be used as a first resort in times of pain and trauma.  And although we often seek treatment after injury or pain, the best treatment is prevention!  Seeing a chiropractor for regular care not only can prevent injuries from happening but will shorten the duration and intensity of pain after trauma.

Gaucher Disease and Chiropractic-Is it Safe???

People suffering from Gaucher Disease are often susceptible to fractures and bone pains, including the neck and spine.  The disease is characterized by gene mutations that cause abnormal breakdown of sugar-lipid combinations in the body.  Because of this breakdown, they have an increased chance of bone fractures.  Often times patients with Gaucher Disease believe they are not a candidate for chiropractic care.  There is a common belief that chiropractic adjustments are too forceful for their delicate spines.  However, the truth couldn't be more opposite of this.  Because chiropractors specialize in specific and precise techniques, there is little to no risk for these patients.  Especially seeking a chiropractor who is trained in upper cervical care can provide much needed pain relief for those suffering with Gaucher Disease.

In 2017, a study was published following an 8-month old patient with Gaucher disease.  He was constantly sick, had chronic pain at that young of an age, and difficulty breathing, always extending his head backwards (likely as a pain response), and was diagnosed as failure to thrive.  His quality of life was poor as an infant.  His chiropractor found several subluxations throughout the neck and spine, and were adjusted often.  After only one month of receiving chiropractic care, the child had already gained control over his body, stopped extending his head backwards, and has relief in his breathing difficulties.  He appeared to be in much less pain.  What a fantastic turn around for a patient who would have been set up for a life of pain, medications, and low quality of life.

No matter what the disease is, specific chiropractic adjustments will improve the nervous system function and allow patients to live the life they have always wanted!

Backpack Safety

It's back to school time!  One important thing parents often overlook is their child's spinal hygiene.  The changes of a new routine that they encounter can impact their health.  A backpack is not usually thought more than just a way to carry things to school, with children often picking their bags based on the color, design, etc.  However, it is important to help your child choose a backpack that best supports healthy spinal posture.

Did you know that the MAXIMUM healthy backpack weight is 10-15% of your child's weight? For most elementary aged kids this equals about 1-2 textbooks.  The reason that this is important is your child's developing and growing spinal joints.  Stress to these joints causes subluxations in the neck and back, leading to pain.  Adding extra weight to the backpack increases this stress placed on the nervous system.

Fit is also important when choosing a backpack. The bag should not sit lower than the waist as this increases tension load on the shoulders and drives the shoulders back while pushing the neck forward.  Also, if possible, buy a back pack with added straps at the waist and/or shoulders across the chest as this helps distribute the weight more evenly.  And as always, get your child adjusted!  Chiropractic kids are proven to miss less school days than children who do not get adjusted regularly! Have a happy and healthy school year!

Can Chiropractic Save You Money?$?$?$?$

Our current healthcare system can change by the day.  With the amount of people in the country with a chronic illness, and the rising costs of healthcare to manage those chronic conditions, many people are finding it unaffordable to manage their health.  Traditionally, medical management of pain and chronic conditions require a lot of time, money, repeated prescription drugs, referrals to several doctors and specialists, diagnostic testing, diagnostic imaging, and that doesn't include the insane costs of a hospital stay.  In 1995, it was shown that 75% of people aged over 55 years had at least one chronic condition to manage.

According to a researcher at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Pran Manga, chiropractic care has benefits to your bank account.  He suggested that the "poor or worrisome health outcomes of medically managed diseases, illnesses, or injuries" have not yielded the optimal results that one often finds with chiropractic care, and the cost of mismanagement of these issues are over double than when seeking chiropractic.

Over DOUBLE! The majority opinion would say the cost of medical vs chiropractic care of an issue of back pain would be more than double, if not quadrupled!! Imagine, coming to one office for your treatment, instead of the above mentioned route of doctor, x-rays, lab, pharmacy, physical therapy, etc. Plus, when you consider the preventative benefits of chiropractic adjustments, when you seek to treat the cause of the problem, not treat the symptoms after the problem has occurred, chiropractic is the safe, gentle, and COST-EFFECTIVE choice!

Management of Concussions with Chiropractic

Concussions obtained in sports is a hot topic right now.  There are several benefits to competing in sports, but there must be caution and awareness given to the risks associated with impact sports.  Image result for cam newton helmet to helmet hit
Over 3.8 million concussions occur every year in the country, and unfortunately the majority of these happen in high school athletics.  Concussion primarily affects the sensorimotor system in the brain.  A 2007 study published in Clinical Neurophysiology showed improvements in concussed individuals following chiropractic treatments.  Adjustments were given to the cervical spine, or neck area, and several areas showed improvement.  The overall recovery time for patients under chiropractic care following a concussion were significantly higher than those not under chiropractic care.  Sensory integration improved, which involves an athletes ability to touch and balance.  Also, proprioception improved significantly (meaning the body's awareness of its position in space.)  This is vital for athletes because poor proprioception leads to an increased risk of permanent, career-ending injuries.  For example, there is a 4x greater risk of an ACL tear following concussion because of poor proprioception.
Getting checked regularly for nerve interference increases the body's sensorimotor integration!

Chronic Illness in Children

Our bodies have the unique ability to adapt to our environment.  It is widely accepted that the strength of our immune systems depends on environment factors.  This is especially evident in children.  Do you have a friend whose child always seems to be sick?  Have you looked at their environment in which they are being raised such as smoking in the home, emotional stress, sleeping habits, food and beverage choices, exposure to other children, etc and thought no wonder why they are always sick?

A 9 year old patient who was chronically fighting illness such as ear infections, constipation, sinus issues, chronic sore throat, and bloating were just to name a few.  Her mother brought her to a local chiropractic office and multiple subluxations of the spine and neck were discovered.  The child was having neurological signs and symptoms as well.  After only 3 months of routine chiropractic care, the child saw major improvements in her sleeping, constipation issues, and less congestion and sinus infections.  Her overall health was improved and the child missed much less school.

These symptoms were alleviated due to the ability to remove the nerve interference.  This is why chiropractic adjustments can help with allergies, asthma, headaches, bowel issues, restless leg, ADHD, sinus infections, ear infections, and many more especially in the pediatric population.  Children's bodies respond more quickly to chiropractic adjustments due to the fact that they have lived shorter lives in a state of bodily stress, and therefore it takes less time to correct subluxations.

Can Chiropractic Help Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is known as a mystery diagnosis to most in the medical profession.  Little is known about the cause of fibromyalgia, and patients who have been diagnosed experience a wide range of symptoms, as well as severity of symptoms.  Because so little is known about specifics, treatment plans seem to vary widely and therefore patients are left feeling frustrated as if they are fighting an uphill battle.
A commonly accepted theory of fibromyalgia is atlas subluxation that causes distorted activity in the brain and it's neurons, which can cause widespread activation of the brainstem and cerebral cortex.  By removing the subluxation with specific upper cervical adjustments to the atlas bone, neurological irritation is gone and the brain's processing pathways are freed to improve function and regulation.

A 2015 case study followed a 32-year old woman who saw a COMPLETE resolution of all fibromyalgia symptoms after only 4 months of chiropractic care! Her initial pre-x-rays revealed a complete loss of cervical curvature in the neck (0 degrees out of 45 degrees).  Her atlas bone was also severely out of alignment.  After 90 days of treatment, a follow-up examination and x-rays took place and revealed restoration of the atlas bone to full alignment and an increase in her cervical curvature to 0 degrees to 20 degrees!  After 4 months of treatment, the patient experienced 100% improvement of her symptoms, and was no longer bedridden, experiencing pain, fatigue, or depression.  She was removed of all pain medications!

Study Finds Improvement for Depression, PMS, Dysautonomia, and Insomnia with Chiropractic!

A case study published in November 2016 followed a young 27-year old woman suffering from depression, insomnia, severe effects from pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), headaches, constipation, and heartburn.  It is known that at least 16% of Americans suffer from depression.  Physical symptoms associated with depression such as decreased energy, fatigue, anxiety, loss of interest in activities, guilt, insomnia, helplessness, difficulty concentrating, heartburn, and physical pains throughout the body.  The exact cause and triggers of depression may be unknown, but what is very clear is that with depression the brain experiences biochemical changes and also in the nervous system as well.
Chiropractic care evaluates and corrects interference found in the nervous system by aligning the spine.  Since we know that the nervous system controls the bodies regulation of all of the above listed systems, it is clear to see how chiropractic care can improve symptoms of depression.
The woman in the case study was given questions at the beginning of treatment and follow-up questions after 3 months of chiropractic care to quantify her improvements.  After 3 months of treatments, she had a 48% improvement in her depression, 18% improvement in sleep related symptoms, 46% improvement in PMS-related symptoms, 18% improvement in headaches, and an incredible 51% improvement in digestive issues.  All because of removing subluxations found in the spine that changes the way the nervous system functions.  Chiropractic care has amazing results for symptoms you would never think of!  When you release the subluxation, the body is able to remove symptoms and function properly.

Improvement of Scoliosis!

Scoliosis seen in childhood that is allowed to progress into adulthood has been shown to lead to cardiovascular disease, respiratory failure, back pain,  spinal degeneration, disability, emotional impairments and a decreased quality of life.  Approximately 2-4% of children ages 10-16 have scoliotic curves left unattended.  Traditional, conservative methods for treating scoliosis includes braces, and spinal exercises.  Severe treatment includes surgery with rod placement around the spine.

A long-term study followed adolescents with scoliosis whose curves were in 2 categories; a 7-10 degree scoliotic curve or at least an 11 degree curve or worse.  In this particular study, all patients were receiving chiropractic care for over one year.  The researchers who conducted the study found improvements of 48-62% of their curvatures.  Meaning, patients with 7-10 degree curves found a 62.1% improvement of those scoliotic curves! All because of gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments to the neck and spine.

Chiropractic care can not only improve scoliosis but prevent progression of it!

Non-Surgical Treatment for Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome is often described as pain, numbness, or tingling on the side of the wrists due to the Median nerve in the wrist being aggravated.  Carpal tunnel can affect both wrists simultaneously.  The pain comes from the Median nerve, which controls muscles and sensations in the arm and wrists.  The nerve is comprised of branches of nerves stemming from the spinal nerves in the middle neck and upper back.

When subluxations are present in the neck, we often see symptoms in other areas of the body, such as the case with carpal tunnel.  Patients feel numbness, tingling, and pain in the wrists and hands when the actual cause of the symptoms is rooted in the neck.  The pain associated with carpal tunnel can be debilitating, causing great stress by effecting everyday activities such as eating, driving, and personal care.  Chiropractic care has long been proven to help with carpal tunnel syndrome.

A study published in 2014 followed a woman with carpal tunnel syndrome in both hands who had improvement following just 5 chiropractic adjustments.  When an adjustment is made to the cervical spine to relieve the pressure on the nerves, those nerves are able to function optimally and symptoms are reduced.  Chiropractic adjustments are safe, gentle, and non-invasive treatment for carpal tunnel patients that provides treatment to the cause of the syndrome not just to the symptoms.

Research Provides New Hope for MS Patients

After images taken of the spine in a weight-bearing position as opposed to laying flat, researchers have learned that many symptoms associated with MS can be caused by misalignments found in the vertebrae of the neck. This misalignments or subluxations can be related to injuries as far back as eight or more years ago!  These subluxations block cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from flowing freely to the brain and spinal cord.  These obstructions increase pressure in the skull and cause "leakages" into the surrounding brain tissue.  The protein found in the CSF leaks have been found to cause an autoimmune reaction in the brain that leads to symptom-generating lesions found in multiple sclerosis (MS).

Specific chiropractic adjustments can improve the flow of CSF by removing these misalignments and subluxations.  In a study published in 2011, one particular patient experienced immediate improvements in vertigo, vomiting just after their first adjustment!  The time between injury and onset of MS (8years) shows why it is essential to get checked regularly by your chiropractor, especially after any injury! Even if you are not experiencing symptoms after an injury, research is showing that particularly with MS patients the disease is showing 8 years after traumatic injury.

Benefits of Chiropractic: Blood Pressure Regulation

A 2014 randomized control study showed the positive effects that chiropractic adjustments to the neck can have on blood pressure and the autonomic nervous system.  The autonomic nervous system controls unconscious activities such as digestion, breathing, heartbeat, and blood pressure.  There are 2 divisions of the autonomic nervous system which are the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions.  Fight or flight survival response is the sympathetic division, often seen as the "gas pedal" of your car (or your body).  On the opposite side the parasympathetic or the "brake pedal" to your car controls rest, growth, digestion, and relaxation.  This is the system in which we want to have in control, and to keep our sympathetic system out of overload mode.

When there is a subluxation, or nerve interference quite often in the upper cervical neck, is can drive our sympathetic system into a dominant state.  What this can mean is that we are stressed, having our body's physiology change and make our systems work in a "survival" mode.  For example, blood pressure will rise, release of increase of stress hormones, and the digestive system will slow as well as our immune system will suppress itself.  This leads to pain and disease.  During the study listed above, the findings proved adjustments to the upper and lower neck both shifted the body back into it's preferred parasympathetic state and decreased patients' blood pressure. By aligning the neck, the body was able to calm back into the "rest-relax-growth" system that it was meant to function in.

Reflux in Infants

Reflux, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), happens when the contents of the stomach ascend up the esophagus which causes heartburn and irritation.  Often infants will have persistent "spit ups."  There has been a dramatic increase in the use of medications to treat GERD in pediatric patients, even though safety measures have not been set or tested on this age group.  However, instead of using medications with unknown side effects on infants, there is a natural, more effective remedy for reflux in the pediatric population.

A 2016 report described how a young child less than 3 months old was experiencing GERD daily, worsening at nighttime.  Initially, the girl saw improvements that lasted for a 24 hour period.  Over the first 3 months of chiropractic care, the patient continually improved and she only experienced GERD after missing an appointment after those first 3 months!  Chiropractic adjustments corrected the nerve interference that control the stomach. Even though 3 months seems like a long time in a pediatric patient, it's important to remember that healing takes time and repetition.  Eventually the child will hold their adjustments and will need only maintenance care.

Stop the Spinning! Relief from dizziness and Meniere's Disease

Conditions such as Meniere's Disease effect the inner ear that can have patient's feeling dizzy, lightheaded, and even experience loss of hearing.  The cause is often misunderstood, but can include incidents such as falls, slips, and traumatic injuries to the head.

Specific adjustments to the TMJ joint (the temporomadibular joint) have improved and/or relieved the symptoms associated with dizziness and Meniere's Disease.  In a chiropractic study involving over 300 patients experiencing these symptoms, they all had vertebral subluxations (or interferences. Over 97% of these patients showed dramatic improvement or complete resolution of their symptoms after chiropractic adjustments.

There is a common belief that abnormal cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) flow to the head and neck is also a contributing factor for Meniere's Disease.  This flow is interrupted by the subluxations and therefore the spinal motion and movement is distorted.  Because of this road block, the fluid flow becomes abnormal and fluid may build up in the inner ear as the inner ear and the perilymph systems are connected.  When the inner ear is imbalanced, this leads to the dizziness, lightheaded feeling, and hearing loss. A simple yet effective chiropractic adjustment restores the proper flow of CSF and relief of symptoms.

Relief for Chronic Bedwetting!

There is a 15% chance for chronic bedwetting by the time children reach 5 years of age. A study published in 2015 reported cessation of bedwetting after gentle chiropractic adjustments. Young male children who experienced chronic bedwetting had nerve interference reduced through chiropractic care and soon after relief of bedwetting ensued.

To understand how chiropractic care relieves bedwetting, we must first understand the root cause of it. During sleep cycles, your body regulates breathing in order to keep carbon dioxide levels normal. When there is disruption to the Phrenic Reflex (usually by nerve interference in the upper neck), the breathing pattern and regulation is altered.  As a result, carbon dioxide gets backed up, which then inhibits the bladder muscles made of smooth muscle tissue. Therefore, the release of urine happens as those smooth muscles are relaxed.

Restoring proper alignment to the upper cervical neck results in proper function of the Phrenic Reflex. This allows the body to regulate its breathing and restore control of the smooth muscle which make up the bladder. Amazing that bedwetting control comes from the nerves found in your cervical neck! Simple, gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments are needing to maintain homeostasis in children and adults!

Effects of Trauma at Birth and Correlation to Immunity

There has been a large increase in both the rates of chronic immune diseases such as asthma, allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, crohn's disease, and skin conditions and the rate of cesarean sections. Although C-Sections are an incredible life-saving procedure, there has been an overuse and abuse of the procedure which appear to have significant public health implications.  Even though the World Health Organization states that the ideal rate of cesarean delivery in the US population would be 15%, our country currently rates at more than double that around 33%.

Significant research from Denmark proves that over a 35 year study cesarean delivery of babies is associated with significantly increased rates of asthma, connective tissue disorders, juvenile arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, immune deficiencies, and leukemia.  Also correlating strongly to lifelong health issues is babies born early. This information suggests that critical and traumatic events around the time that a child is born initiates a disease trajectory.  This could have effects on childhood and adolescent immunity and into adulthood.

Chiropractic care to pregnant women is essential to help avoid unnecessary cesarean deliveries and other traumatic interventions during pregnancy.  Birth is traumatic for the baby, no matter what way they are delivered! Therefore chiropractic adjustments as close to time of birth can instantly change the trajectory of a child's immune, neurological, and digestive systems.  Continued pediatric care strengthens a child's musculoskeletal system as well. Healthy kids become healthy adults! Don't wait until the branch is broken to save the tree!

Chiropractic Care for Seizure Disorders

Chiropractic has a long and successful results in patients with epileptic and other seizure related disorders.  Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which the patient has excessive neuronal discharges with an altered or even lost state of consciousness.  Each year, the management of epilepsy costs the United States around $16 billion dollars for testing, medication, and treatments.

A case study published in 2015 followed a young 2 year old child with frequent seizures.  Severe subluxation of the atlas (the bone at the top of the spine in the neck) was found.  After 5.5 months, this patient was completely seizure FREE.  Simple, effective, specific adjustments to remove the nerve interference caused by the subluxation reduced the neuronal discharges sent to the brain.  This particular child also had major improvements in language development and cognitive abilities during the study as well.

Removing the subluxation allows the body to function properly!

Latching Problems While Breastfeeding...A Simple Solution for a Stressful Situation

When a baby is delivered, cranial bones move and overlap to allow for flow through the birth canal. With the added use of delivery tools such as forceps, vacuum suction, and hands during c-sections, misalignment of the bones of the cranium and neck is a common result.  These misalignments (or subluxations) irritate the cranial and spinal nerves in the newborn. Specifically for breastfeeding infants, irritation to cranial nerves 9-12 can inhibit the suck-swallow-breathe sequence which is vital for success.  Gentle, specific chiropractic adjustments to the upper neck (cervical) and jaw joints allow for babies to latch and feed without these irritations.

A 2015 case report describes a one month old infant presenting with difficulties with latching and not breastfeeding successfully.  After only one adjustment, this infant immediately latched on and the suck-swallow-breathe reflex was restored to full function.  Imagine the relief that not only the patient but the patient's mother experienced! Breastfeeding is not only difficult, but extremely stressful.  When you throw in difficulties latching and staying latched, the rate at which mom's stop breastfeeding skyrocket.  The number one reason more moms don't breastfeed past 2 weeks is a lack of support during the high stress time of mom and baby learning how to successfully breastfeed.  Breastfeeding is completely natural, and it provides excellent nutrition for healthy immune systems, growth and development.

Chiropractic adjustments can help mom, too!  Adjustments to the upper cervical neck for mom allows for the nerve interference to be removed allowing for proper let down of milk during feeding sessions.  Also, chiropractic care reduces stress and pain in the shoulders, neck, and back that are often associated with breastfeeding positions.  Proper alignment and function is necessary for successful breastfeeding for both mom and baby!

Pregnant at last!!! Dr. Knutson Mtnislandchiro.com

Infertility is a major problem plaguing families around the world. With the busy, stressful lives most people live today, we’ve seen a spike in the number of infertility cases present in the general population. Did you know that chiropractic care has been shown to reduce stress and in some cases allow women to conceive?

A 2012 article published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, and Family Health reported on a 29-year-old woman who had tried to conceive for the last 8 years. Following 1 month of subluxation-based chiropractic care pregnancy was attained. How does this happen?
Reproductive organs thrive when the body is in a relaxed state. When your chiropractor reduces nerve interference due to subluxation, your body is free to function at its best: allowing you to no only feel, but more importantly function well.

No matter the symptom, your body functions better without nerve interference!

Alternative for fevers?

Fevers are naturally common indicator of immune system activation and are triggered by bacteria, virus, and internal chemicals. Changes in body temperature are tightly controlled by inborn mechanisms. Increases in temperature from fever result from an internal biochemical cascade and are generally fought using over-the-counter drugs like NSAIDs (like ibuprofen and acetaminophen).

A 2016 case report describes an 11 yr old boy who had a fever for five days prior to chiropractic management. His fever had ranged from 101-103 degrees Fahrenheit even though mom had treated him with acetaminophen every 4-6 hours. After being checked for nerve interference and adjusted by a chiropractor, within 60 minutes his temperatures had dropped to 98.4 degrees and his behavior had returned to normal.

No matter the symptom , your body functions better without nerve interference!

Hope for Trigeminal Neuralgia with Chiropractic

Trigeminal Neuralgia, Tic Douloureux, or Cranial Nerve V neuralgia is a neurological disorder characterized by immense pain and spasm in the side of the face. It is often misdiagnosed as a dental or jaw problem and in the past has even been considered a psychological disorder.

Research shows that trigeminal neuralgia originates from compressive forces surrounding the trigeminal nerve. Because of the immense pain and difficulty in diagnosing, intense medications and surgical treatment is regularly offered.

Due to the neurological origin and increasing trends towards alternative options rather than drugs and surgery, many individuals suffering from trigeminal neuralgia have turned to chiropractic for help.

A 2016 case report described a 55-year old woman who had been suffering from Tic Douloureux for 6 months. After a thorough evaluation of her spine and series of adjustments to the upper cervical neck her facial pain completely dissipated! After only three months, she reported that she had not had any further episodes of Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Adolescent Athletes and Chiropractic Care

Performing arts and athletics play an integral role in growth and development of our children.  These activities build physical, mental, and emotional skills while also providing character, leadership, and discipline opportunities for growth.  Most children carry these activities from childhood into adolescence, teenage years, and through adulthood.  Unfortunately, physical stress, especially repetitive physical stress can result in injuries to the adolescents growing body.  A case report published in 2013 followed a 14-year old ballet dancer who sought chiropractic care for her developing hip pain due to repetitive dance movements. Stress on the joints during physical movements cause pain especially when those joints are not fully developed.  This dancer saw fantastic results when after only 10 specific adjustments, her pain was gone, restriction resolved, and she was back to 100% participation in her ballet studies!

Chiropractic care works best as preventative healthcare, however in times of pain and inflammation, it can work wonders on a growing body. It's never too early to start chiropractic care for all members of your family. Imagine waiting until you were 10-15 years old to see a dentist! We must think of chiropractic care as an integral part of our adolescents health and wellness care.

Menstrual difficulties and chiropractic

Menstrual cycle irregularities are more commonplace than you might think.  Many women experience great amounts of stress due to irregular menstrual cycles, especially if trying to start a family. Chiropractic care has shown to regulate women's cycles after just a few visits. In 2012, a study was published that showed a 39-year old woman who had sought chiropractic care for low back pain. This patient also had painful periods that only occurred every 3 months.  Her irregular periods had been going on for over 11 years. She started to experience a regular menstrual cycle after just 2 visits, and after being under the care of her chiropractor, she had experienced routine periods for 7 of the 8 months of the study! By removing the subluxation through a chiropractic adjustment, the nervous system was able to function properly and the body returned to a state of homeostasis.

Constipation Helped with Chiropractic!

Did you know with the increase of prescription drugs Americans are having more and more bowel issues? Constipation affects upwards of 3% of North American children and can cause much family stress.  About 30% of these children will continue to have constipation into their adult years. Many parents are hesitant to treat constipation with potentially harmful drugs such as laxatives that can stop an adult or child from getting the nutrients from the foods they eat and look elsewhere for help.

In February of 2016 a research case study was published that may bring hope to many patients. An 8 month old baby boy was brought into a chiropractic office for a spinal evaluation after he had not had a bowel movement for many days. He was checked and analyzed for vertebral subluxation and a specific adjustment was given to reduced nerve interference.

As they were leaving the office, the baby boy had a bowel movement in the car seat!  Just a few hours later the parents called the clinic to inform the staff that her son had another two bowel movements since returning home!

A small change in structure can make a huge change in function!!!
